Escape Gallery (at No Mas! Hacienda & Cantina) hosts Marco Razo for the September 2015, Castleberry Hill 2nd Friday Art Stroll. Additional work will be shown, and purchase is available. An architect and painter, Marco Razo was born in Mexico City, studied Architecture at UNAM (University Autonomous of Mexico) and has a Masters (MFA) from Pratt Institute in New York. “My paintings are representational. I like to explore the human figure in its endless aesthetic possibilities. The subjects of my work, sometime capricious, some meditative, derive from philosophy, literature, poetry, cinema, and daily life. “For example, from the writings of Spanish phil osopher Jose Ortega y Gasset, I use the circle to represent the human head. In literature, I am influenced by Gabriel Garcia Marquez and Jorge Luis Borges, as well as poems by Octavio Paz, Pablo Neruda, Antonio Machado, and Federico Garcia Lorca. From the U. S., William Faulkner, Maya Angelou, Alice Walker, Toni Morrison, and Georgia’s Flannery O’Connor.
“Sources of inspiration also arise from the works of various cinema directors, especially Federico Fellini, Bernardo Bertolucci, Luchino Visconti, Michelangelo Antonioni, Luis Bunuel, Akira Kurozawa, Carlos Saura, John Ford, Stanley Kubrick, and Orson Welles. “The use of color in my work –
often shades of green, yellow, and mustard – have a strong influence and come from popular art in Mexico and Haiti. I like to paint with a modern fresco technique, a mix of plaster with pastel paint.”
